In the early years of the nineteenth century, between 1805 and 1808, Martello Towers were built along the Kent and Sussex coastline from Folkestone to Seaford. These towers, 74 in all, were built to defend the coast from attack and imminent invasion; Napoleon posed a serious threat and was amassing an army of 150,000 men, ships and equipment at Boulogne, across the English Channel. Many of these Towers have survived to this day, several are derelict but most have been converted to other uses, including dwellings.
