BUILDING INSTRUCTIONS

1/8th Scale model of Rex Garrod’s Legendary Robot ‘CASSIUS’.

The model nets should be printed on card - Ideal thickness is 160/180 gsm. or 200 microns.

To make assembly easier, it is suggested that the CHASSIS BASE component could be stuck on to thicker card. It is difficult to assemble the model if the chassis card is thin and too flexible.

Start by examining the three basic components, and identifying all the scoring and cutting lines.

TECHNIQUES:

SCORING:

Identify all the lines that need to be scored.

  • The printed card must be on a flat surface.
  • Place the ruler accurately on each line.
  • Hold the ruler firmly in place.
  • With your other hand, use a pointed instrument, held at no more than 450 to the paper, to score along each line.

CUTTING OUT:

It is better to score all the lines before cutting out the parts.

  • Cutting out with a sharp craft knife is very similar to scoring but pupils must take their time and be as accurate as they can and be very careful. (It is certainly better to cut the narrow papered ‘V’ shaped piece on the top of the body, with a sharp knife.)
  • If pupils use scissors, they will find it better to roughly cut out each piece a few millimetres outside the line and then carefully cut to the line.

GLUE:

PVA glue is probably best, but it can be messy and difficult if not used properly. DO NOT put out pots of glue and plastic spreaders. Provide only small quantities of adhesive and use cocktail sticks to apply it. Stick tabs, one at a time, with only a light skimming of glue and hold in place for a few seconds. Using too much glue takes too long to dry and will result in a messy model.

ASSEMBLY: 1/8th SCALE CARD MODEL OF ‘CASSIUS’,

CHASSIS:

Cut out the chassis base. (Glue to thicker card)

  • Score all the lines on the Chassis Spine before cutting it out.
  • Fold all the scored lines. (The light grey tabs should be folded out, all the other folds should be inwards.)
  • Glue ONE grey tab to the light grey tab marked on the base.
  • Glue the second grey tab in place.
  • Make sure that the spine is vertical and then glue the tabs on the sloping parts of the spine.

Now score and cut out the main body component. Make sure that

You cut out the tiny ‘wedge’ shaped piece on the top.

SCORING: There are a lot of lines to score, be systematical, make sure that you don’t miss any.

Score all the lines on the bottom edge of the body, there are 8.

  • Score all the lines on the top of the body sides, there are 7.
  • Score all the body side tabs, there are 6.
  • Score the two diagonal lines, coloured grey, from the middle of the body top to the sides.

ASSEMBLY:

Start by gluing the tab on the top of the back part of the body   to the two parts of the back of the body top. ( Be particularly   careful here, badly aligned parts will distort the finished model.

  • Now, one at a time, glue all the other tabs to give the main body its shape.

The body will now be a sort of ‘angular dome’ shape and be starting to look like Cassius.

The base is designed to allow for any small discrepancies in the body.

Fitting the body to the chassis is quite straightforward but you MUST do it in the following sequence:

Start at the front

  • Put a ‘smear’ of glue on the body front tab and some glue on top (only) of the spine.
  • Fit the body to the chassis, being careful to get the front edge central and square.
  • Put glue on the bottom tab of the back section of the body and, making sure that all the other tabs are outside the chassis base, align the two parts accurately and fix in place.
  • Allow a few moments for the glue to set.
  • Put glue on ALL the other tabs and fold them into position.
  • Stand the model on a flat surface and hold down until the glue is set. You could, carefully, put a weight on top of the body, on the horizontal section of the chassis spine.
  • When the glue is dry, the model is almost finished. The finishing touch is the wheels. Take a length of 15 – 18 mm. quadrant, about 8 cm. long and coloured black, and glue it to the underside of the chassis just in front of the join of the back and middle body side panels.
