Broadwater Warren is the largest and best potential heathland restoration site within the Kent/East Sussex Weald. 171 ha of this land will be restored back to prime lowland heathland, ensuring our natural heritage is conserved for future generations to enjoy. The work will restore a site of high conservation importance and provide the RSPB with a means of demonstrating and advocating restoration techniques to neighbouring land managers. It is being developed with appropriate physical and intellectual access, opening it up as a free community amenity from which all can benefit.

A volunteer home visiting scheme, targeting birth to 12 months, is promoting inter-agency collaboration and community action and is increasing the support mechanisms to build capacity and empower local communities. A network of experienced parents has been recruited and trained to work as para-professionals, offering home visits, support, information, mentoring and befriending to other local parents. The scheme is promoting health and positive parenting, tackling isolation, encouraging maternal well-being and supporting fathers.

The aim is to enable more residents in the Rother area to eat affordable, locally grown fruit and vegetables and other local produce, and to make more links with food growing schemes and local producers based in the area. Many villages in Rother have poor local access to shops selling fresh fruit and vegetables. In those with shops, the turnover of fruit and vegetables is small and therefore it tends to be expensive and of poor quality. A fruit and veg delivery service will be set up to serve sheltered housing schemes, local residents, schools and local businesses. To achieve this, the project will work in partnership with residents, community groups, local producers and also village shops.

Advice on conservation and environmental land management is being delivered to smallholders (landowners under 20Ha). Awareness of potential grant funding from agri-environmental schemes is being raised, together with awareness of landscape and heritage issues within the High Weald. Specific advisory packs and technical information sheets are being produced and landowners and contractors will be linked wherever possible.

The project has provided a new community facility to promote and raise awareness of the use of local, environmentally sound materials, energy efficiency and water conservation. The building now offers a demonstration venue for viewing sustainable building materials and methods and is attracting young people, in a deprived rural area, into training in rural skills and on into further training or related employment. The exercise is raising awareness of farming, and related food and conservation issues, with school children and members of the local community and the new building will become the venue for the Rural Rother Activities Adult Learning Community Hub.

The cultural life of a rural community, currently under-provided for, is being transformed by the provision of a programme of cultural events and activities, presented in the Observatory Arena (recovered from the wilderness under phase one of this project). The programme is aimed at a variety of audiences, but with an over-riding accent on young people, who will benefit from activities leading to additional skills, increased confidence and the development of a pride and awareness of their local heritage through participation in the arts. Community involvement in all events is a high priority of the programme.

The aim is to provide a pilot programme of advice and training, relating to woodland management, sustainable timber production and added-value timber processing. The project will offer free outreach visits and subsidised training and will support the growing demand for wood as a low-carbon and renewable energy source. The methodology and expertise will be tested and refined and, if found to be feasible and viable, will be rolled out to other parts of the region.
